Intraoral scanners for taking digital impressions can aid in sleep disorders.

The CS 3600 intraoral scanner from Carestream Dental will be compatible with ResMed’s Narval® mandibular repositioning device (MRD) for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and snoring treatment.

The CS 3600 was introduced at the International Dental Show 2019, in Cologne, Germany, and will be available April 15, 2019.

“More and more studies are revealing the life-changing benefits of quality sleep, and a sleep appliance can aid tremendously,” says Ed Shellard, DMD, chief dental officer, Carestream Dental. “But to ensure the perfect fit of an oral appliance, the accuracy of an intraoral scanner, like the CS 3600, is needed for taking digital impressions. As sleep dentistry continues to grow in popularity, such partnerships will help doctors provide new solutions to their patients."

According to a recent study in BMC Oral Health, the CS 3600 is said to offer highly accurate full-arch HD 3D impressions. Its acquisition software includes features specific to sleep medicine, such as the multiple bite capture option. Clinicians can easily capture and view up to three different bite registrations, such as normal, open and protruded. Next, clinicians can export the bite matrix files with the dataset to ResMed and complete the online order form on the “Narval Easy” platform for fabrication of the Narval appliance.

By integrating high-precision intraoral scanning into its CAD/CAM manufacturing process, ResMed enables dentists to get access to a 100 percent digital oral appliance. Overall, it reportedly allows an even higher level of quality and service to dental practitioners.

“This fully digital manufacturing process improves the Narval CC’s fit and significantly reduces the level of adjustments needed at chairside,” says Karène Valentin, dental sleep marketing director, ResMed. “It also saves time by eliminating the need to send impressions by post.
