You can’t treat what you can’t see, which is why proper lighting and magnification are must-haves for every clinician. That’s why loupes are so widely used in dentistry these days. Because loupes are required to be worn and used for long periods of time, comfort and ergonomics are equally as critical as their magnification performance.

This is likely why manufacturers today offer a wide array of styles, frames, and magnification powers. With so many options, dentists and hygienists should do their homework before investing in loupes.

Keep in mind loupes are of little help if they aren’t adjusted to your individual measurements. If they are not, they can actually do more harm than good. The point of loupes can enhance patient care by improving your visibility while also preventing eye strain, and when properly fit they should keep your head as close as possible to neutral (20 degrees or less).

With so many factors involved in such an important piece of equipment, it is important to choose loupes that offer you comfort, ergonomics, and of course, performance. Here is just a small sampling of the many dental loupes offerings available today.
