Dr. Norman Dahl is always on the lookout for products that make him more efficient or improve patient care. If he finds something better than what he’s currently using, he doesn’t hesitate to make the switch. But after using Pentron’s Build-It FR Core Material for nearly a decade, he doesn’t envision making a switch any time soon. Why? He simply hasn’t found anything better. Here’s why ...

What would you say are the main benefits of Build-It FR?

It’s easy to use, dispense and place. I’ve had people I’ve done build-ups on come back a few years later to get their crowns done. The builds-ups I did were so good there wasn’t any break down; they were just like I left them. They held up almost like a composite over time. Beyond that, the material also has good density. When you’re prepping the tooth for a crown, it doesn’t slide off the tooth structure and dip into the material. It holds up well so you can prep uniformly around the tooth. It has a great bond to tooth structure and is easy to place. And it has a great working time. It’s very versatile. To me it has all the properties it needs for the job that it’s doing.

Why did you decide to try this product in your practice?

I try anything that might do a better job for me, any kind of material that’s advanced and holds better properties than the previous version. Have I tried other core materials since then? Yes. Does anything perform better than what I use now? No. Through it all this particular material has worked best.

Build-it FR

Build-It FR Core Material contains all of the features of an optimal core build-up material-it cuts like dentin, contains fluoride, is dual-cured (shades A2, A3, and Opaceous White), and it is radiopaque. The addition of specially treated glass fibers enhances the compressive strength to an 280 MPa. Benefits include: it’s available in 25 mL auto-mix cartridges and 4 mL Mini-Mix™ syringes; both are syringeable and stackable for greater ease of use; dual-cure (light-cure or self-cure) for maximum flexibility; radiopaque for easy detection of marginal areas on X-rays; available in 5 shades, A2, A3 and Opaceous White for cosmetic restorations and Gold and Blue for margin definition.

Why would you encourage other clinicians to give this build up material a try?

Pentron’s Build-It FR Core Material is going to offer them everything they need to do a post and core build up. It’s going to bond well, it’s going to handle well, it’s going to last a long time and it’s going to prep well. The build-ups I do with Build-It FR hold up really well under the crowns and have proven to stand the test of time. Why wouldn’t you use something like that, something you can push beyond its limits and it holds up? I wish all materials worked like this, as far as doing what they’re designed to do.
