There are many ways to tell the story of a year in the dental lab industry. Here we present some interesting metrics, statistics, and other numerical milestones from the past year.

  • 111 new lab products
    were profiled in the 2022 issues of Dental Lab Products®.
  • 200 active certified dental laboratories (CDLs)
    The National Board for Certification (NBC) also reports that it had over 5500 active certified dental technicians (CDTs) and 350 recognized graduates (RG).
  • 56% selected multilayer/multishade zirconia
    as the material innovation that had the biggest impact on their lab operations, according to the 2022 Dental Lab Products® Materials Survey.
  • 125 years in business
    is the milestone achieved by Sterngold in 2022. Other companies celebrating notable anniversaries this year were Pulpdent, which marked 75 years since its founding; Keating Dental Lab, which celebrated 20 years in business; Panthera Dental, which marked 10 years; and Carestream Dental, which noted the fifth anniversary of its spinoff from Carestream Health.
  • 65.8% of people in the US
    have a dental restoration. Each case represents an act of service, carefully planned and thoughtfully executed by a dental technician or CDT, according to the National Institutes of Health.
  • 6 specialties
    are currently recognized by the NBC: ceramics, complete dentures, crown and bridge, orthodontics, partial dentures, and implants. To become a CDT, a technician must demonstrate knowledge and applied skills in the chosen specialty.
  • 50% strongly agree
    that 3D printers are a good way to draw in clients and market to them, according to the 2022 Dental Lab Products® Technology Survey, which asked about the technologies that make a big impression on clients and drove new business.
