I recently had the chance to talk to Dr. Jonathan Ferencz, a prosthodontist in New York City and the scientific chair of an upcoming conference on digital dentistry being held in Orlando, Fla.

During our talk, I asked him about where digital dentistry currently stood, in his opinion, as well as where he felt the trend was heading in the future.

“This is really a fascinating change in dentistry and I think it’s the biggest change in prosthodontics in my 40-year career,” Dr. Ferencz said. “In many ways, this is much more exciting than dental implants.”

Dr. Ferencz told me that he thought it was very interesting that the push for digital dentistry was coming about now, especially since CAD/CAM technology has been around since the mid-1980s. However, technology has brought everything together in unison for today’s dental practice.

“Scanning technology has improved a lot and computational power has improved tremendously as well,” Dr. Ferencz said. “That kind of technology has changed digital dentistry considerably. Today, the clinical results that can be obtained by using digital dentistry are truly outstanding.”

Click below to hear more thoughts from Dr. Ferencz, including the roadblocks that he believes keep dentists from embracing digital dentistry, and how those roadblocks can be overcome.
