Dr. William Twohig comes from a family with medical background that runs deep. His father was a physician and instilled in him open-mindedness and forward thinking. Soon after he began his dental practice he considered looking into methods that were unconventional in dentistry, and has maintained a “thinking outside the box” mentality throughout his career. Dr. Twohig practices dentistry In Weyauwega, WI with a natural and holistic approach. His philosophy is based on the idea that he strives not to alter any other part of the body by dental procedures that he performs in a patient’s mouth. He holds himself to this high standard by continuing to be well informed about cutting edge ideas and technology and by attending classes and seminars. Through this education and by staying up-to-date with the latest procedures, Dr. Twohig has carefully implemented the appropriate concepts into his practice.

For example, in the early stages of its availability, Dr. Twohig integrated the first light cured composite material into his practice. After this transition, he was able to implement safe mercury removal. He also has a fluoride free practice. Early in its use he adopted the practice of using ribbond resulting in the reduction of leakage and sensitivity in composite restorations. What could be better than patients leaving an office with no residual discomfort?

As time progressed and information and materials became available, Dr. Twohig began looking into the concept of enhancing the body’s internal environment through improving the biological terrain. After attending sessions at the Pankey Institute in Key Biscayne, FL, Dr. Twohig returned to Wisconsin and began a dental study club in his area. He regularly takes courses provided by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology and follows its lead by applying the academy’s underlying ideas into his dentistry.

Inspired by Dr. Phil Mollica and Dr. Robert Harris from the American College for Integrative Medicine and Dentistry, Dr. Twohig now incorporates ozone therapy into dental treatments. The research and work that Dr. Julian Holmes of South Africa performed in this field was also an inspiration. This type of treatment has positive therapeutic and preventative effects on dental tissues without the harmful effects of chemicals. Dr. Twohig’s methods incorporate the use of ozonated air, water, and oils.

Because Dr. Twohig’s practice is fluoride free he prefers to treat newly erupted teeth with ozonated air soon after eruption. If the grooves in the teeth are deep, but not yet decayed, he sterilizes the tooth with the ozonated air and then flows in a minimally invasive glass ionomer material for protection. He prefers this to sealant material because he believes the material is better able to stand the test of time and is less intrusive to the tooth.

When Dr. Twohig performs a new patient exam he thoroughly discusses all health issues with a patient as they relate to the patient’s dental health. He puts both time and effort into understanding their entire physical condition prior to creating a dental treatment plan. He considers himself to be a biological dentist and after this comprehensive examination, he applies his minimally invasive approach to treating and meeting their dental needs. Furthermore, he makes sure that his staff is well educated in all of his procedures and the underlying concepts that support his treatments.

Twohig’s office is also mindful of the environment, which mirrors his naturalistic approach to treating his patients. He feels that going green simply takes time and the right mindset. His office paperless, utilizes non-disposable air and water syringes and dappen dishes. The cleaning products used are all biodegradable and ozonated water is used where applicable, such as on countertops. Ozone works by interfering with the molecular structure of harmful bacteria thereby eliminating contamination.

His professional philosophy follows a trend sought by many patients. His local community has responded well to his practice. Dr. Twohig has patients who drive several hours to see him even from as far away as Phoenix, AZ. Patients seek him out because they are searching for a dentist who will listen and treat them the way they want to be treated. As an added bonus he has negotiated with local area attractions, hotels, and spas to offer a 20-percent discount to his long distance patients.

Patients and fellow professionals are looking forward to seeing his new website, www.drtwohig.com scheduled to be available this month.
