Approaches to Reduce Aerosol Production During Dental Procedures: A conversation with Dr. Sam Low

Video

Dr. Low discusses approaches such as the use of high volume evacuation and dental lasers to reduce aerosol production during dental procedures.

Sam Low, D.D.S., M.S., M.Ed., joins Dental Products Report Editorial Director Noah Levine to discuss steps to practice safely during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The interview touches on a range of topics related to safely practicing dentistry while there is an active infectious pandemic. Dr. Low shares his feelings and the research he's seen about pre-procedural rinses, high volume evacuation, and the use of dental lasers in place of the dental handpiece.

Dental lasers have been shown to reduce the volume of aerosolized particles released during a procedure due to the reduced volume of water sprayed into the patients mouth during use. These lower volumes of water reduce the size of the aerosol cloud, likely making procedures safer for clinicians.
