Children in Nicaragua go to school until noon, change clothes and then sift through trash to earn money for their families, accoding to Novy. They survive drinking bags of sugar water, yet do not have caries. Why? Their mouths are so dirty and filled with various bacteria that caries don’t result.

In another scenario, Novy noted that caries decreased until 1992 and increased significantly in 1995. Why? In 1995, fluoride varnish was introduced.

Participants learned : to understand how to intervene medically in the caries process; to control rampant caries with focused therapeutics; and prolong the life of restorations in all patients.
