How to: Control color stability with ultra-thin porcelain veneers Creating long-lasting, vital restorations while minimizing tooth preparation is the primary objective in modern cosmetic dentistry. Clinicians and patients continue to be concerned with the reduction required for some ceramic systems, and this has led to the evolution of “ultra-thin” ceramics options. These new systems impart both beauty and strength and often permit “no-prep” and “low-prep” veneering options.

10 Questions: Gary Steinberg 01 Crosstex started as a dental company, not a medical company that later expanded into the dental industry. What advantages does that offer you? The primary advantage is to our customers. Being a dental company, we are more responsive to our customers and their needs. During the recent H1N1 pandemic, we made sure our dental customers were never in a back-order situation. Our medical counterparts couldn’t provide the same level of support to their dental customers.
Don’t forget about one-piece implants The set-up “Dr. Gause makes a compelling case for the utility of one-piece dental implants, particularly in sites with limited availability of mesial-distal (interdental) bone. Eliminating the implant-abutment interface with its screw retention necessarily increases the strength and stability of the implant and its prosthesis. The trade-off is reduced prosthetic flexibility, as the angulation of the ‘abutment’ portion of the single piece can only be modified by reduction.
The advantage of blue 1. The BlueView cure-through matrices offer clinicians plenty of options and are available for Class II, Class III, Class IV and Class V restorations. 2. The Matrix Tape features blue tinting to provide much needed contrast between the matrix and tooth structure, making it easy to see preparation margins and correct matrix placement.

How to: Graft an extraction socket Socket grafting is an increasingly common procedure. Current conventional wisdom is that the extraction socket should be grafted irrespective of whether a dental implant placement is planned. Socket grafting helps to maintain the ridge by regenerating new bone. The result is better both functionally and cosmetically. DentoGen® is a medical-grade calcium sulfate hemihydrate-based bone graft material developed and sold by Orthogen LLC. DentoGen is indicated as:
Safe, effective interproximal reduction 1. OS (oscillating segment) Discs are 60° segmented with a radius of 1.4 cm and a pivoting angle of 30°, allowing comfortable intraoral handling even in posterior areas with excellent user control. 2. A more effective method than manual enamel reduction, the OS Discs reduce the risk of injuring soft tissue without the need for a disc guard. 3. OS Discs allow very good vision for the user and provide optimal chip removal.
Wondering what’s next in cosmetic dentistry? The Set-Up “The esthetics of the smile involves more than just the teeth. Cosmetic dental materials placed by an artistic operator can create ‘that movie star look,’ but what about the ‘frames’ around those smiles? The perioral tissues are areas that can contribute to making people appear older than they would like. This month, Drs. Malcmacher, Krever and Feck discuss the use of dermal fillers to help these patients make not only their teeth look younger, but make their face look younger as well.
Exclusive Survey: Part of the team It's time to come together. With everything we know and are learning about the oral-systemic link, dentistry can no longer be the missing piece of to the health care puzzle, an entity separate from the rest of the health care team. That simply isn't good enough for your patients. You have to become involved in your patients' overall health, and that means building relationships with their medical doctors.
How to: Create Protection for Ortho Brackets Maintaining excellent hygiene can be a challenge during orthodontic treatment. However, this problem can be addressed with the use of 3M ESPE’s Vanish™ XT extended contact varnish, combined with ongoing daily brushing with a fluoride toothpaste. Vanish XT immediately creates a protective barrier on the tooth and provides a long-term release of fluoride, calcium and phosphate. The varnish can be applied either directly following bracket placement or later, depending on the patient’s level of risk, and its effectiveness continues for up to six months after placement.
