Oral-B has developed the first interactive electric toothbrush with Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity and shared the news first with Dental Products Report at the Chicago Dental Society Midwinter Meeting Thursday morning.

The new Oral-B SmartSeries will be available in Germany and the U.K. this spring, with plans to make it a available in the U.S. this fall.

The Oral-B SmartSeries power brush brings smartphone technology to toothbrushing and is designed to promote enhanced collaboration between the patient and dental professional. Via Bluetooth 4.0 technology, the interactive electric toothbrush connects to the Oral-B App that provides real-time guidance while patients brush.

It also records brushing activity as data that can be shared with their dental professional, helping to create and manage smarter, and more personalized brushing routines.

Oral-B demonstrated the technology for DPR this week and features include reminders Oral-B SmartSeriesabout flossing, tongue cleaning, pressure monitoring and Oral-B says the product's app will provide a "whole new level to drive compliance."

Not only does the patient get real-time information while brushing, but the technology tracks data on how long and frequent patients brush and this information can be shared with dental professionals to help set up a focused care program to build a smarter routine. There are also “rewards” built in to help motivate the patients.

If the data shows a patient is missing an area of the mouth with regular brushing and then the dental professional notices oral health issues in that area, the patient can then make sure to focus more on that area and the device will be able to show them as they brush if they are attacking the right area in the right way.

The product will also tell users when they need to replace their brush heads and those can even be ordered through the smartphoine whenever needed, but as the Oral-B spokespeople stressed most, this is a system to "really drive good oral care habits at home."

If you get the chance to visit at CMW, Crest Oral-B is at Booth # 2402.
