Mother says dentists pulled son's teeth without consent

A California mother is irate because she says although her nine-year-old son takes part in the Big Smiles Program, she never signed the extraction consent form before her son's teeth were pulled at school.

Alexander Henry had four teeth pulled as part of the Big Smiles Program that is contracted by the San Diego Unified School District. The program provides free dental care to hundreds of local children.

A long-lasting impact

Whether asked to hold a light, run to get cotton swabs or suction a patient’s mouth, Gina Durkin was happy to help in any way she could as a member of an American team of dental professionals and students that recently visited Nicaragua.

"A pebble in the ocean.."

Marianne Benson is the mother of a 41-year-old son with a developmental disability. She knows about the difficulties of providing dental care to this underserved population, many of whom have never received dental care. Often, they are fearful, require sedation, or do not understand what's happening to them when they are in a dentist's office. Many have lost their teeth because of a lack of care and health coverage.
