(Not pictured Dr. Marsha Butler) Inside the pages of Dental Products Report you regularly find plenty of clinicians who write clinical articles to share their expertise on a topic or to offer how-to tips in the technique articles. But we don‘t want to forget about the dental professionals who give their time and energy to help others, which in turn helps give dentistry a great reputation. Here, we turn the spotlight on five such individuals who are making a difference. They include practicing dentists in cities big and small, a dentist now in the corporate world and a hygienist volunteering her time to make sure oral health is delivered to those in need. Brush for Two Sara Beaupre is not your ordinary hygienist. Not only does she take great pride in offering the best care, she’s also a big believer in education and prevention. But that’s not all. The Wisconsin woman also took it upon herself to set up a program, “Brush for Two,” designed to help pregnant women in her community. Thanks to a tremendous response from local dentists, it’s been a big success. Read more. Bright Smiles, Bright Futures Dr. Marsha Butler — VP Colgate-Palmolive Colgate threw a big party this October in New York, and with good reason. TeamSmile Dr. Bill Busch — Kansas City dentist When Dr. Bill Busch and Henry Schein’s Jason Krause co-founded TeamSmile and kicked off the program with a fun-filled football weekend in the fall of 2006, the two thought they were on to something. With plenty of support from dental professionals and manufacturers, TeamSmile screened close to 150 children and treated 40 at its first event. Even with this success, neither doctor expected to see the program explode in just four years to the point where Justin Timberlake, national news coverage and multiple football and baseball stops are all part of the dental outreach program. Read more. Tomorrow’s SMILES Dr. Ronald Goldstein — Atlanta dentist Dr. Ronald Goldstein’s father taught him plenty over the years, and he certainly taught him some dentistry along the way. But one thing the older Goldstein made sure his son learned was the importance of giving back. Because of this, the 50-year practicing cosmetic dentist decided last year, right around the time he turned 75, to contribute a sizable donation to allow the National Children’s Oral Health Foundation to launch Tomorrow’s SMILES. The program, aimed at high school students, provides oral health services to help promising at-risk students be better prepared for happy, healthy and productive futures. Read more. Iowa FIND Dr. Sarah Jewett — Iowa dentist With a critical shortage of dentists in underserved Iowa counties, the Iowa Rural Dental Health Initiative started the Fulfilling Iowa’s Need for Dentists (FIND) community collaborative project in November 2008. The project is designed to alleviate the shortage of dentists in areas of need by enhancing the Delta Dental of Iowa Loan Repayment Program that helps dentists with their dental education debt.
