A digital x-ray image offers many characteristics that film does not. One very important attribute is the image can be “enhanced”—that is, filters can be applied to images. DEXIS Digital X-Ray System image enhancements do not alter original image information. Instead, they allow the clinician to view the image differently to aid him/her in diagnoses.
Enhancements can be applied to both intraoral and extraoral images.
Changing the brightness and contrast on all DEXIS images is a simple “click and drag” of the mouse. As a security feature, images are not permanently changed by this or any other enhancements. Return to originally captured image settings by clicking the Home icon.
ClearVu™ is one of the most widely used enhancements in DEXIS. Though not limited to this use, ClearVu enhancement most often is used to detect caries and fractures. The clinician initiates ClearVu by clicking on the ClearVu icon. Both enlarged and standard-size images will display in this mode. For an added option, click on the Add ClearVu button in the Navigator screen. In this case, the enlarged image will display side-by-side in both standard and ClearVu modes.
Other enhancement modes, as well as ClearVu, are accessed from the Enhancement window. Simply click on the Enhancement icon. In all enhancement modes, the clinician can further change the brightness and contrast by dragging the cursor on the image. All modes can be easily turned off by deselecting their buttons or icons.
Invert reverses the gray values of the image, similar to a negative for a black and white photograph. This mode often is used to determine the position of canals within the root of the tooth and for verification of caries, especially when used by toggling between the Inverted and non-Inverted ClearVu-ed image.
Color, which can be combined with Invert, is often used for anatomical density clarification.
With the Darker mode, the software compensates for varying densities in different areas, such as anterior and posterior teeth on the same x-ray. This enhancement is especially helpful for diagnosis using bitewings.
The Relief mode’s topological embossing filter gives a 3D appearance to x-ray images.

Simple to use Drag the cursor on the image in a vertical motion for brightness changes and horizontally for contrast changes. | | Improved detail ClearVu uses mathematical algorithms to present the image in a way that allows dentists to see more detail. |

Adding value Users initiate Invert from the Enhancement window. | | Color clarification Often used for anatomical density clarification in implant planning and surgical procedures. |

Bitewing diagnosis The darker mode enhancement was designed to be especially helpful for diagnosis using bitewings. | | X-ray reading assistance Relief mode emphasizes small density differences which can help communicate with people not used to reading x-rays. |
