Dr. Feldman also suggests getting in touch with Beach Patrol. According Bobrow, Feldman claims that practices located in or near beach towns should get familiar with the local beach patrollers or beach managers because anyone suffering from an injury beachside, will be seen first by Beach Patrol. Dr. Bradley Engle of Naples, Florida also spoke to Bobrow and suggests doing a direct mailing to timeshare associations. Engle says, if one person puts your practice’s information and services in a visible part of the condo, then all other timeshare users will have easy access to a recommended dental provider. Set aside some time for dental emergency cases each day. If you’re booked solid and an emergency enters your practice and you are unable to attend to the patient in a timely fashion, that person may relay the information back to where they found it (i.e. hotel concierge, hospital, call center, etc) You want positive feedback about your services, so try adding some extra time during vacation season for dental emergencies. In addition to bringing in additional revenue and production, the true benefit of servicing a dental emergency is being able to help someone. In terms of helping tourists, you get the opportunity to save a vacation. Bobrow learned that patients that suffer from dental emergencies can become permanent patients. If the emergency you treat is from a vacationer that visits the same place every year, they may schedule their dental appointments into their vacation. Or if you are able to deliver great service as a qualified practitioner with a qualified staff, that news could travel around town. Word of mouth is an extremely powerful and compelling marketing tool. You never know whom a vacationer will tell about their positive experience with your practice in a time of need. They may even help generate a new patient base with the locals in your area. They key to successful marketing is to be open to the opportunities around you. Contact nearby hotels, beds and breakfasts, timeshares and medical care and hospital facilities. If you work near a beach or pool, be sure to contact management as a practice that specializes in emergency dental care. Consider taking out an ongoing ad in the local newspaper, newsletter or yellow pages. Be sure to emphasize your ability to handle emergency situations and the services you provide. But above all, be friendly and positive to the vacationers and locals in your area. You never know who you might meet in an emergency situation and the opportunity to help someone and save their vacation from disaster is worth the effort.
