April 2009 | Dental Products Report
01 As a leader in digital x-ray for nearly two decades, what do you believe sets Schick apart from the rest of the industry? Innovation. Since 1992, Schick has introduced numerous “firsts” in digital radiography that have become standard throughout the market, including CMOS imagers, multiple sizes, LED illuminated intraoral cameras and retrofits for film pans. Schick also provides the market with truly unique designs such as wireless and removable cable sensors. 02 What do you have to say to the doctors who fear investing in digital? Many doctors fail to recognize that by going digital, they are able to eliminate all costs associated with film, including chemicals and labor, while reducing chair time per patient and increasing case acceptance. These combine to provide the practice with a clear increase in profit. 03 How does a doctor know if digital is right for his or her office? It’s not a question of “if,” but “when.” Film is an archaic imaging medium that fails the doctor in terms of efficiency and the patient in terms of radiation dosage. From consumer products to professional and medical devices, film-based products are rapidly disappearing from the marketplace. There is no better time than now to go digital. 04 What would you say to dentists who would prefer to wait for the economy to rebound before investing in digital radiography? A frequent comment that we hear from our customers is, “I wish I’d done it sooner.” I encourage any dentist still using film to contact any one of the more than 30,000 satisfied Schick users to hear how Schick has improved their practice. 05 What is Schick currently doing to help U.S. dentists transition to digital? Together with our partners at Patterson Dental, our current “Zero” deal—0% interest and 0 payments for 12 months—allows doctors to earn enough through the benefits of Schick to pay for the system in full before any payment is due. We call this concept “return before investment.” 06 What is software’s role in the purchasing decision for digital x-ray? Many of the available intraoral imaging software programs perform most of the same functions. There are numerous options on the market, many costing thousands of dollars. Schick’s CDR Dicom software has been established as one of the leading brands of intraoral imaging software. To further assist a dentist to transition to digital x-ray, we will now make CDR Dicom software available for free to every U.S. dentist. 07 Why is it important for a dentist to have more than one size of sensor? In 1994, Schick revolutionized digital radiography with the introduction of 3 sensor sizes that were aligned with the film sizes routinely used in dental offices. Proper diagnosis with film required multiple sizes to adequately address all patients’ needs; it’s the same with sensors. 08 Is a practice required to be committed to one sensor brand? Actually, many software programs are designed to handle different brands, but many dentists want uniformity in their practice. At Schick, we offer a generous trade-in program that allows dentists who initially bought other brands to replace those brands with Schick. To date, we have received more than 1,000 trade-ups. 09 The ADA recommends dentists follow the ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) principle – how does Schick help? Schick’s CDR sensors allow a reduction in radiation of up to 90% over film, and require one of the lowest dosages of all digital sensors. This provides a safer environment for both patient and clinician. 10 With such compelling reasons to go digital, why is the adoption rate not faster? Simply put, it’s the fear of change. Every dentist knows they need to transition to digital, yet for many it’s something that’s easy to delay. Those with the courage to move forward to digital find that their fears were unfounded and are rewarded handsomely. Photo by: Michael Voltattorni
