An invitation to participate in an online DLP CAD/CAM Survey was e-mailed in September 2007 to random sample of Dental Lab Products’ circulation to 2,531 laboratory owners and managers in the United States; 181 usable responses were submitted for a response rate of 7.2%. Graphs are presented in percentage of total responses.
Of the survey participants...
• 61.5% are a sole proprietor • 17.9% are a partner (1 of 2 or more owners) • 11.2% are a manager (on salary, commission, or percentage basis)
• 63.0% are a crown & bridge lab • 18.2% are full service (crown & bridge, dentures, implants) • 8.8% are full/partial dentures; • 6.1% are full-service (crown & bridge, dentures, implants, ortho)
• An equal percentage (22.8%) currently serve either 5 or fewer dentists or 6-10 dentists • 17.8% serve 11-15 • 7.8% serve 16-25 • 10.6% serve 26-50 • 4.4% serve 51-75 • 3.9% serve 76-100 • 2.8% serve 101-150 • 7.2% serve more than 150. • The mean number of dentists served is 32.8.
• 43.0% of labs have 1-2 technicians • 26.3% have 3-5 technicians • 16.8% have 6-10 technicians • 10.1% have 11-25 technicians • 3.9% have 26 or more technicians. • The mean number of technicians is 6.
• 30.4% of labs are located in the Southeast • 23.8% in the Midwest • 22.7% in the Southwest • 14.4% in the Northeast • 8.8% in the Northwest.
• 23.3% are located in a small city • 20.0% in the suburb of a large metro area • 17.2% in large metro area • 16.1% in a mid-size metro area • 10.6% in a community with less than 20,000 population • 2.8% in an extended large metro area.
