IDS 2009

Walk the halls with tens of thousands of dental professionals in Cologne, Germany to see the latest new product innovations.

No evidence of the global economic slowdown was visible on the floors of the 33rd International Dental Show (IDS) in Cologne, Germany at the end of March as tens of thousands of dental professionals and manufacturers from around the world gathered at the KölnMesse exhibit arena to make strategic trade alliances, find new and profitable distribution channels, and invest in new product innovations for the future. Not even the cold and the rain dampened the spirits of the nearly 106,000 visitors eagerly seeking to view, touch, and learn about the latest product developments on display in each of the nine expansive exhibit halls.

Here is an overview of major and minor laboratory and clinical introductions seen this IDS. I’m sure there are many I missed, so if you attended the IDS and found some innovative new products not mentioned here or in our coverage on all the new CAD/CAM introductions at the IDS on page 68, please contact me (pjohnson@advanstar.com) and we will include them in extended coverage on our Web site. Keep in mind some of these new developments are not available on the U.S. market at this time. As they become available we will feature them in our New Products section in subsequent issues.

Sirona Dental systems
Leading the way in solving integration of digitally captured information, Sirona announced the company’s Galileos CBCT cone beam tomography computer images can now be combined with digital impressions acquired by its new CEREC AC Bluecam digital impression-taking device. The new Sirona Implant software module automatically proposes implant placement for surgical analysis and provides the dentist with the option of ordering a surgical guide from a centralized production center or in the near future from an inLab laboratory, using CEREC Connect technology.

The company also introduced the inLab 3D Stack software module that allows technicians to place up to 27 restorations within a single zirconia milling block and introduced two new milling block sizes for the application. Another new software module for inLab CAD/CAM users, 3D for Abutments, allows crowns and abutments to be designed simultaneously, complete with anti-rotation locking devices. Currently available for CAMLOG implants, the system will be extended to other popular implant types by this summer.

Also notable were the introductions of the TENEO treatment center with EasyTouch user interface for controlling all standard functions as well as add-on options and LEDview operating light, boasting a maximum light intensity of 30,000 lux and no-touch sensor control or control via the user interface on the treatment unit.

Ivoclar Vivadent
A partnership between Ivoclar Vivadent and Straumann AG was announced that will allow Straumann to use the IPS e.max zirconia for creating Straumann Anatomic IPS e.max implant abutments as well as IPS e.max lithium disilicate ceramics for milling full-contour crowns using Straumann (etkon) technology.

A new nano-hybrid composite denture tooth line, SR Phonares, allows selection based on age and tooth type from youthful, universal, and mature to soft and bold options for fabrication of highly esthetic dentures. The four-layer denture teeth comprise 18 maxillary and four mandibular molds.

A new smaller milling block size for the IPS e.max ZirCAD zirconia was announced. Advantageous for milling small single-tooth copings, the ZirCAD C13 blocks are designed to reduce material usage and cost per coping.

Chairside, Ivoclar announced a new nano-hybrid direct composite, IPS Empress Direct, which builds on the esthetic success of the company’s IPS Empress indirect pressable ceramic. For faster polymerization, the company has integrated “polywave” LED technology to its next generation of Bluephase curing lights. The Bluephase 20i and C8 generate a broadband light spectrum ranging from 380 to 515 nm, and the 20i in Turbo mode can cure light and dark composites in five seconds. For cementing fixed, implant-retained restorations, Ivoclar introduced Multilink Implant, a self-/dual-curing two-component luting composite and also a universal primer for simplifying the bonding procedure to all restorative materials.

3M ESPE
Advancing the company’s selective partnering concept, the 3M ESPE Lava CAD/CAM system will soon be able to access laser sintering technology for chrome cobalt frameworks. In a conversation with Manfred Hinz, 3M ESPE Global Business Team Leader Lava CAD/CAM, it was revealed that 3M will be selectively partnering with EOS and Phenix Systems to provide Lava owners with laser sintered restorative options.

Chairside, the company has redesigned its Elipar curing light. The new S10 LED polymerization device is housed in a one-piece stainless-steel hydroformed shell with sealed buttons for contamination-free use. The use of the Protemp line of temporization materials has been extended to include temporization solutions for implants. Protemp 4 and Protemp Crown can both be placed on the temporary abutment after the initial healing phase. Protemp 4 is indicated for multiple units; Protemp Crown for single units.
