A Perfect Storm

Get connected with anything, anywhere, anytime.

By David Lesh, CDT

A perfect storm is the simultaneous occurrence of a series of events that create something far more powerful than if any of the events would have occurred alone. This could be said of the new Blackberry Storm. The Storm is the convergence of the most significant advancements in mobile communication to date, all in a singular device.

A Pressing Difference
The hallmark of the design is the Storm’s oversized glass face that elegantly dominates its overall esthetics. Powered up, a dominating glass touchscreen displays relevant keys and menu items illustrated as beveled, multi-dimensional buttons.
Unlike any other phone to date, these virtual buttons, menu items, and selection items actually press and click giving the tactile effect of pushing a real button. The pressing sensation is created by the micro-movement of the entire touch screen and improves the certainty and accuracy of pressing buttons on a flat glass surface.

Smooth Features
The Storm also does a great job at improving many features popularized by the iPhone such as iTunes integration and enhanced Web browsing. This is achieved through a combination of an HTML layout that accurately represents the look of the Web page and larger display screen.

Beyond just iTunes integration, the multimedia enhancements include a gigabyte of built-in memory, a 3.2-megapixel camera with flash, and even video capture.

Fast Moving Storm
The Storm offers a bevy of robust features for busy professionals always on-the-go. Blackberry e-mail and other communications are virtually flawless, as is its synchronization with your PIM (personal information manager) programs such as address books, calendars, task list, and more.

Users can receive, save, view, and edit documents in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Its Bluetooth allows for hands-free communication and use as a wireless high-speed, 3G Internet modem. A removable 1400mAh battery charges quickly and provides six hours of talk and 15 days of standby time.

This Storm has global reach with a preinstalled SIM card offering phone service in more than 215 destinations and e-mail in more than 170 countries worldwide. Other features include GPS with spoken directions and even location-based services through Google Maps.

Pack it all together and you’ve got the perfect storm ready to take on the world.
