I was lucky enough to sit down with Miles for an exclusive two-part interview on a wide range of subjects from leadership in the practice to holding team members accountable to advice to make your business better. Below are some of the nuggets of knowledge from our interview.

Nugget 1

“There are four words of empowerment when it comes to the dental team: Hire them, trust them, train them, and praise them,” Miles said. “Communication is at the base of everything when it comes to leadership in the dental practice. I also firmly believe that if you put the patient first, everything else falls into place.”

Nugget 2

“If you have great leadership in the practice, you’re going to have highly accountable people,” Miles said.

Nugget 3

“It’s important for dentists to hire someone who knows more about the business side than they do,” Miles said. “The dentist always has overhead concerns and worries about production and that’s where someone in the front office working as an office manager can be so valuable. Yet so often I see a division within the practice between those who work in the administrative team and those who work on the clinical team. Everyone in the office thinks they have the toughest job in the practice … and it some ways they are exactly right as everyone in the practice has a difficult job and has to do it well in order for the practice to succeed.”
